In 2021, I secured planning permission from Babergh District Council for a new glamping site near Long Melford and Sudbury in Suffolk, comprising a yurt, a shepherd's hut and an ancillary utility block providing toilet, wash and kitchen facilities.

The case required addressing ecology, landscape and flood risk matters through specialist consultants, and was strongly supported by the Council's economic development team who recognised the proposal's tourism and biodiversity benefits.

Glamping Site Approved Near Long Melford, Suffolk

I secured planning permission for the creation of a glamping site near Long Melford and Sudbury in Suffolk. The proposed development comprised a yurt and a shepherd's hut, together with a small ancillary utility block providing toilet, washing and kitchen facilities for guests.

The site offered an attractive rural setting close to two of Suffolk's most historic and well-visited market towns.

The first stage of the project was a detailed planning appraisal to understand the risks and identify the issues that would need to be addressed for the application to succeed. That assessment identified ecology, landscape and flood risk as the key site-specific matters requiring specialist input.

Third-party consultants were appointed at the outset to form part of the project team, conducting the necessary surveys and assessments to demonstrate that no adverse ecological or landscape impact would result from the proposed development, and that any flood risk was capable of being appropriately managed.

The architects designed an attractive and sensitively positioned site plan, with the accommodation placed to minimise visual impact and maximise the natural qualities of the rural setting.

Babergh District Council received the application positively. The Council's economic development team gave strong support to the proposal, recognising its direct contribution to local tourism diversification and the rural economy.

The planning department approved the application promptly, confirming it accorded with all relevant planning policies.
