Camden Council Approves a Garden Room in the South Hampstead Conservation Area
Planning permission from Camden Council for a single-storey garden room at the end of a rear garden in South Hampstead, within a conservation area, demonstrating the building would be visually concealed and would cause no harm to the conservation area character.

In 2024, Camden Council approved planning permission for a single-storey garden room at the end of a rear garden in South Hampstead, within a designated conservation area.
The structure was sited discreetly behind bamboo planting and a water feature, used a sedum green roof and timber cladding, and was designed to cause no harm to the character of the conservation area.
Garden Building Granted Planning Permission by Camden Council
I secured planning permission from Camden Council for a new single-storey garden room at the end of a private rear garden in South Hampstead.
The new space provides additional incidental residential accommodation for the occupants of the ground floor and basement flat on the property.
The site falls within the South Hampstead Conservation Area — a designation that required planning permission for the garden room, which might otherwise have been built under permitted development rights in a non-sensitive location.
Within a conservation area, the local planning authority can require planning permission for outbuildings and must satisfy itself that any new structure would not harm the character or appearance of the area.
The design was developed with conservation area sensitivity at its core.
The garden room is positioned at the very end of the garden, maximising its distance from neighbouring properties and from any public viewpoint.
It will be screened from view behind contemporary bamboo planting and a water feature at the garden boundary.
Materially, the structure was designed to blend into its green setting.
Camden Council was satisfied that the proposal would not harm the character or appearance of the South Hampstead Conservation Area and approved the application.
