In 2010, I submitted representations on behalf of a London-based commercial property company with a substantial multi-let workspace portfolio to the Hammersmith and Fulham Development Management Policies consultation.
Development management policies translate the broad strategic direction of a core strategy into practical decision-making criteria, making engagement at this stage particularly important for commercial property owners.
The representations focused on ensuring that the policies governing employment sites and mixed-use areas were drafted in a way that provided commercial flexibility without undermining the borough's employment land supply.
Hammersmith and Fulham sits within a highly competitive west London commercial market, and policies that fail to reflect market realities risk reducing the attractiveness and viability of commercial property investment.
Detailed policy-by-policy engagement provided the opportunity to influence the precise wording of development management policies, with lasting effects on how planning applications at client sites would subsequently be determined.
