In 2009, I engaged with the Hackney Core Strategy consultation on behalf of a London-based commercial property company with a substantial multi-let workspace portfolio, which held a significant commercial presence in the borough.
Hackney had experienced rapid economic transformation, with growing demand from creative, tech, and SME occupiers sitting alongside pressures to release employment land for residential development.
Representations to the core strategy focused on securing policies that supported the retention and enhancement of affordable commercial workspace, recognising the vital role that flexible, managed workspace plays in sustaining Hackney's diverse economic base.
The work also addressed the risks of overly prescriptive land use policies at a time of significant economic change, arguing for flexible criteria that allow sites to evolve without requiring constant planning permission.
The core strategy representations helped ensure that the client's portfolio was positively recognised within the emerging policy framework.
