In 2023, I secured advertisement consent from the City of London Corporation for two new signs on a retail unit on Fenchurch Street, EC3M — a non-illuminated fascia sign and an externally illuminated projecting sign.
The site is adjacent to the Leadenhall Market Conservation Area, which required careful attention to design, materials and illumination to satisfy the City's planning requirements.
Fenchurch Street Advertisement Consent in the City of London
I obtained advertisement consent from the City of London Corporation for signage at a retail unit on Fenchurch Street, London.
The approved proposal included a non-illuminated fascia sign measuring 3.07m wide and 0.60m high, positioned 2.50m above ground level, together with an externally illuminated projecting sign measuring 0.8m wide and 0.7m high at 2.75m above ground level.
The site is adjacent to the Leadenhall Market Conservation Area, meaning that the design and impact of any new signage had to be carefully managed. The City of London applies high standards to shopfront and advertisement design in this part of the Square Mile.
Constructed from aluminium composite over an aluminium box frame, and finished in anthracite grey with the operator's branding colours, the signs were designed to complement rather than compete with the character of the surrounding retail environment.
The key negotiation concerned the illumination level of the projecting sign.
I engaged with the City of London's planning team and ensured the illumination was specified at a maximum of 150 cd/m² — a level that satisfies the conservation area requirements whilst maintaining the operator's visibility from the street.
The City of London Corporation approved the application. Consent was granted for five years from April 2023 under the Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) Regulations 2007.
