In 2011, I submitted representations on behalf of a London-based commercial property company with a substantial multi-let workspace portfolio to the Croydon Core Strategy Proposed Submission.
Croydon has long been one of London's key out-of-centre commercial hubs, and its core strategy set the policy framework for managing significant mixed-use regeneration alongside the protection of employment land.
The representations addressed the need for flexible policies at commercial sites, enabling owners and operators to adapt premises to the needs of growing SME and creative occupier markets.
Rigid employment-only designations can frustrate the viability of investments and reduce the quality of commercial environments, so the case focused on criteria-based approaches that protect jobs and economic activity without unnecessarily constraining commercial flexibility.
