In 2025, Tendring District Council approved planning permission for a mixed-use veterinary practice specialising in equine and small animal care, with residential accommodation for the live-in veterinarian, at a rural location in Tendring, Essex.
Veterinary Uttlesford District Council Approved a Contemporary New Family Home
I secured planning permission from Tendring District Council for the conversion of an existing rural dwelling into a mixed-use veterinary practice with associated residential accommodation.
The approved scheme converts the ground floor of the property into a veterinary practice providing consultation rooms, a physiotherapy unit and rehabilitation equipment for equine and small animal patients, with the first floor retained as a one-bedroom residential flat for the live-in vet.
The scheme also includes a single-storey extension to provide additional consultation and recovery space, conversion of the existing garage into a physiotherapy unit, and a new stable block for horses brought in for treatment — creating a comprehensive, purpose-designed rural veterinary facility.
The planning policy context was positive. Tendring's rural economic development policies support the establishment of rural businesses that are appropriate to their countryside location. A veterinary practice serving equine clients clearly has a genuine countryside connection.
Tendring District Council approved the veterinary practice application.
